how could I leave my first love?
how could I leave?
before I knew what happened
I was miles away
but still I heard your voice
calling, calling, gently calling
calling me
"Come back, my child.
Come back to stay."

before the evening sun set
I knew that I had gone
wandering far from you
so far away did I roam
and yet your hand was on me
to guide my searching soul
to lead me back to you
to lead me back home

how could I ever leave you?
before I knew what hit me
I was miles away
but still I heard your voice
calling, calling, gently calling
calling me
"Come back, my child.
I need your love.
Come back, my child.
Come back to stay."

Notes:

We're such hopeless creatures. We keep thinking the grass is greener somewhere else. We keep wandering away from the One we love, the One who loves us, the One who can bring us safely home. Luckily for us, He loves us, too. He keeps calling us back. Gently, firmly, calling.

I only performed this song a couple of times at the most. Diane Sampson happened to be in the audience one of those times, and asked me about it on Facebook thirty-plus years after the fact. She even remembered half of the lyrics! So I decided right then and there that this song was to be the first "demo" I'd record and make available here in MP3, instrumental track, MIDI and sheet music formats. That way, you can

  • Download the MP3 version, if you just want to listen and add it to your iTunes library or iPod playlists
  • Download the instrumental track (without vocal), if you want to sing along with the track to perform it for others or yourself
  • Download the MIDI file (standard MIDI file format), if you want to play it through your computer or synthesizer MIDI synthesizer (and be able to transpose it up or down to fit your vocal range)
  • Download the sheet music (PDF format), if you want to play it for yourself on piano (or have someone play it for you)

Hope you enjoy it! If you use it in any of these ways, be sure to leave a comment below. I plan to do this with other songs, too, so stay tuned.

This song has not yet been included in an album collection.
